The Best Way to Clean Plantation Shutters
We all know that cleaning shutters is not the ideal way to spend the weekend. Having to clean every slat is a boring task. In this cleaning process, you will need a microfiber cloth, duster, and vacuum cleaner to clean both the interior shutters as well as the exterior shutters.
Step One: Vacuum the dust
The easiest and quickest way to do this is to use the soft brush vacuum attachment. It will suck up all the dust making the next step easier. Use the vacuum with a dry brush attachment on a low setting to clean each blind.
You should start at the top and clean your way across each slat until you get to the bottom. Make sure you clean the windowsill, as dust will settle there as you clean your way down.
Run the attachment over the shutters to get rid of any stuck-on dirt. Once you have thoroughly vacuumed, you can switch to the duster, in step two.
Step Two: Use a Duster
Once you have thoroughly vacuumed, you can switch to the duster. Run the duster in between each blind, hitting the tops and bottoms, to sweep off whatever might have remained.
You can also take your toothbrush to give those tight corner areas a thorough scrub. With that done, it’s time to move to step three.
Step Three: Wipe down the shutters
After you have removed as much as possible of the dust with the vacuum and the duster, wipe the dust off each slat of interior shutters with a microfiber cloth.
This should help prevent dust from sticking to surfaces. Be sure to pay particular attention to the spaces between the shutters and areas that may accumulate dust. By this stage, the majority of the cleaning should be completed.
Step Four: Clean with White Vinegar Solution
The next step is to wipe your shutters down with water. You will want to avoid harsh chemicals unless you need to remove grease.
Use a solution of 50/50 water and white vinegar to wipe any stains off of your plantation shutters. It’s very important to avoid using too much water, especially with wooden shutters, as it can cause the wood to warp or become discolored.
Once you fully wash the plantation shutters, you need to let them dry properly. Make sure you don’t leave water on them at all or you will see water damage and spotting. This is vital as it also helps prevent dust from getting stuck on the areas that you have cleaned.
